There’s something special about the hum of an old engine and the way it stirs up memories of simpler times. I first felt that four years ago, during my very first visit to the North Texas Antique Tractor & Engine Show—and I’ve looked forward to it every year since. If you haven’t been yet, consider this your official invitation. Join us at Ben Gill Park in Terrell, Texas, on June 14–15, 2025. You won’t want to miss it.

This show isn’t just about tractors. It’s about family, farm legacy, and the kind of community spirit that runs deeper than a freshly plowed field. I’m planning to bring my kids again this year, and I know we’ll be wrapped in that same nostalgic charm—restored tractors gleaming in the sun, the smell of fuel and funnel cakes in the air, and families gathering to celebrate the hardworking history of rural life.

A Show for All Ages

The gates open at 9 AM, and trust me, it’s worth being there when the show kicks off. Kids 8 and under get in free, and for everyone 9 and up, admission is just $5—making it one of the most affordable family-friendly events of the summer.

The show runs Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 2 PM, giving you plenty of time to take in all the sights, sounds, and stories.

Events That Bring the Past to Life

From small engine displays and antique tractor pulls to stationary hay baling and blacksmith demonstrations, every part of the show tells a story. There’s something grounding about watching machinery from the early 1900s still doing what it was built to do.

One of the highlights I’m most excited for is the tractor parade—a rumbling, colorful procession that captures the pride and craftsmanship of generations. And if you’re bringing little ones, be sure to check out the pedal tractors and the kiddie obstacle course. Even if they don’t know the history behind every machine, they’ll definitely feel the fun.

For the Tinkerers and the Curious

One of the most unique features happens Saturday onlyknife and scissor sharpening, a time-honored craft that brings back memories of my grandfather at his workbench. Watching someone carry on that tradition is like stepping into a living museum.

For those curious about the mechanics, the exhibitors and engine enthusiasts are always happy to chat. Many have stories of tractors passed down through four generations—machines that helped shape family legacies and are still going strong.

A Community Rooted in Tradition

What stands out most at this event is the sense of connection. Whether you’re a seasoned farmer, a city kid learning what a flywheel does, or someone who just loves the smell of fresh-cut hay, there’s a place for you here.

The North Texas Antique Tractor & Engine Club puts their heart into this event, and it shows. On Saturday night, they even host a dinner for exhibitors—a thank-you to the community that makes this gathering possible year after year.

If you love old iron, fresh air, and a real dose of Texas heritage, don’t miss this show. It’s a weekend full of stories, smiles, and horsepower you can feel in your bones.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 44 years since the very first Terrell Jubilee—back when it was known as the Terrell Heritage Jubilee. I still remember it like it was yesterday: I was a freshman in high school, wide-eyed and taking in the sights and sounds of something brand new for our town. That first event lit a spark, and little did we know then—it would grow into a beloved tradition that would shape generations.

From that humble beginning, the Jubilee has become a staple in Terrell life. Every spring, families mark their calendars, friends reunite, and visitors from across the region flock to our city to be part of something truly special. Now, we welcome 15,000 to 17,000 attendees each year.

What makes the Terrell Jubilee so magical is that it has stayed true to its roots. Some of the original favorites are still going strong: the pig races (yes, real racing pigs!), the exciting carnival rides, rows of arts and crafts vendors, and of course, food that makes your taste buds sing hallelujah. Funnel cakes, barbecue, turkey legs—it’s all still here and still delicious.

But this isn’t just your grandparents’ Jubilee anymore. We’ve grown! Today, we’re hosting everything from a 5K run to a car show, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, pickleball showdowns, and even an extreme trampoline stunt show. It’s a blend of tradition and innovation, just like our community.

The music stage is always alive with energy, spotlighting incredible talent from around the region. Whether it’s Pop, Rock, Latin, or something in between, there’s a rhythm for every foot to tap to and a beat for every heart to follow.

For me, what started as a fun event to attend as a teen became something I looked forward to sharing with my children—and now, it’s a joy to experience it through the eyes of my grandchildren. That’s the real magic of the Terrell Jubilee. It’s not just an event. It’s a thread that ties our past to our future, our stories to our memories, and our families to each other.

Join us for the 44th Annual Terrell Jubilee, April 24-27, 2025. Come make memories, relive traditions, and be part of the celebration!

Terrell, Texas, has long been a haven for artists and visionaries who use their talents to capture the spirit of the community. The Terrell Heritage Museum’s latest exhibit, Brushstrokes of Time: Kaufman County’s Artistic Legacies, running through March 15, celebrates this artistic heritage by showcasing works from some of the most influential artists to emerge from the region. However, Terrell’s artistic journey does not end with history—the city continues to embrace and promote the arts through initiatives like E! Terrell and the vibrant murals that adorn its historic downtown.

A Celebration of Kaufman County’s Artists

Curated and exhibited by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA), Brushstrokes of Time highlights the enduring impact of artists with roots in Terrell and Kaufman County. Featuring the works of Beverly Ownby Brittain, Otis Dozier, James McCord, Frank Reaugh, Julie Cox Hamm, Paul Tankersley, Guinn Powell, Isabel Branson Cartwright, and Mildred Robertson Warlick, the exhibit offers a unique glimpse into the artistic talents that have shaped the region’s cultural identity.

Among these luminaries, Frank Reaugh stands out as a pioneer of Texas landscape painting. His evocative pastels captured the untamed beauty of the Texas frontier, preserving it for future generations. Otis Dozier, a key figure in the Lone Star Regionalist movement, depicted the struggles and triumphs of rural Texas life with raw emotion and authenticity. Beverly Ownby Brittain, a Terrell native.

Art as a Cornerstone of Terrell’s Development

While Brushstrokes of Time honors Terrell’s artistic past, the city’s commitment to the arts is far from a thing of history. Terrell has continued to invest in cultural expression, recognizing that art plays a vital role in community identity, engagement, and economic growth.

E! Terrell: Keeping the Arts Alive

One of the city’s most celebrated arts initiatives is E! Terrell, a performing arts series that brings world-class musicians, dancers, and theatrical performances to local audiences. This program ensures that residents and visitors alike have access to high-quality cultural experiences, fostering an appreciation for the arts that spans generations.

Murals: A Living Tribute to Terrell’s Story

Terrell’s streets serve as a canvas for a new generation of artists, with murals transforming the city into an open-air gallery. From the sesquicentennial mural celebrating Terrell’s 150-year history to the Wall of Honor, which pays tribute to the city’s African American leaders, these works of public art tell the story of Terrell’s past while also shaping its future. More recent mural projects, including the Camila Sunflower Girl mural and the tribute to Paralympian Randy Snow, highlight Terrell’s ongoing dedication to artistic expression.

Art in Terrell’s Future

The impact of Brushstrokes of Time extends beyond its historical significance—it serves as a reminder that Terrell’s artistic heritage is alive and thriving. As the city continues to support arts education, public art initiatives, and performance programs, it reaffirms its commitment to fostering creativity for years to come. Whether through a brushstroke on a canvas or a mural on a historic building, Terrell’s dedication to the arts remains a defining feature of its cultural and economic development.

Experience the Exhibit

Brushstrokes of Time: Kaufman County’s Artistic Legacies is on display at the Terrell Heritage Museum through March 15. This exhibit is a must-see for anyone who appreciates art’s power to tell stories, preserve history, and inspire the future. While the exhibit pays homage to the artists who have shaped Terrell’s past, the city itself stands as a testament to how art continues to shape its future.

Join us in celebrating Terrell’s vibrant artistic community—past, present, and future.

Honoring History: Remembrance Day and the British-Terrell Connection

Jun 23, 25

Remembrance Day holds deep significance across the world, but here in Terrell, Texas, it carries a unique resonance. Though thousands of miles away from the fields of Flanders and the bustling streets of London, Terrell shares a remarkable connection with Britain that stretches back to World War II. It’s a bond rooted in history, forged by a mutual fight for freedom, and celebrated through a vibrant event known as the British Bash, an annual festival that highlights these transatlantic ties.

A Legacy of Sacrifice and Commemoration

Every year on November 11th, people across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth gather in solemn reflection to honor the sacrifices of military personnel. Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, marks the end of World War I in 1918, when hostilities ceased on the Western Front. Today, the occasion is used to remember all those who gave their lives in conflicts since, with the iconic red poppy serving as a symbol of that sacrifice.

But what does this mean for Terrell? During World War II, Terrell played an integral role in training young British pilots at the No. 1 British Flying Training School (BFTS). Over 2,200 RAF pilots honed their skills here, learning to fly over the skies of North Texas before heading off to Europe to fight in the war. Many of these young men formed lifelong bonds with the community, and their legacy lives on in Terrell’s history.

Terrell’s Own Remembrance

The bond between Britain and Terrell is commemorated each year in October at the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum, located at the Terrell Municipal Airport. The museum stands as a testament to the collaboration between the U.S. and Britain, preserving the stories of the young men who trained here. Artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia bring history to life, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of the cadets who once called Terrell home.

For those visiting Terrell in the lead-up to Remembrance Day, a trip to the museum offers a profound opportunity to reflect on the shared history between this small Texas town and Great Britain. The museum’s collection of wartime memorabilia, personal letters, and original aircraft allows guests to connect with a past where borders meant little in the face of a global struggle for peace.

The British Bash: A Celebration of Friendship

In recent years, the British Bash event has become a highlight in Terrell’s calendar, celebrating the enduring ties between England and Terrell. Held every October, this lively festival brings together residents and visitors alike for a celebration of British culture, music, and history.

The British Bash is much more than a festival. It’s a tribute to the deep friendship forged between the two nations during a time of war. Families can enjoy traditional British food and drink, listen to live performances featuring music from both sides of the Atlantic, and take part in fun activities that embrace the unique cultural blend between Terrell and the UK. The event serves as a reminder of the values that united two nations and continue to do so today.

Whether you’re a history buff fascinated by World War II, a traveler looking to discover the unexpected ties between Britain and Texas, or simply someone who enjoys a good festival, the British Bash offers something for everyone.

Visit and Experience the Connection

As Remembrance Day approaches, Terrell provides a meaningful destination to not only reflect on the past but to celebrate the bonds that continue to thrive. By visiting the No. 1 BFTS Museum and joining the British Bash, you’ll find yourself immersed in a story that transcends time and place—a story where bravery, friendship, and sacrifice form the foundation of a lasting legacy.

This Remembrance Day, let Terrell remind you that history is not just about the past; it’s about the connections we carry forward into the future. So, whether you’re local or visiting, join us in honoring those who served and celebrating a remarkable relationship between Britain and Terrell. The British Bash and our shared history await your discovery.

Terrell, Texas: The Birthplace of Texas’ First Car Ride – 125 Years Later

This October marks a momentous anniversary for Terrell, Texas—a milestone in automotive history that put our town on the map in a way few could have imagined in 1899. It was here, 125 years ago on October 5, 1899, that the first automobile in Texas made its inaugural journey, forever changing transportation in the Lone Star State.

The Man, The Machine, and The Moment

The man behind this historic event was Colonel Edward H.R. Green, a wealthy businessman and son of the famed financier Hetty Green. An innovator and a man of great vision, Colonel Green purchased the first “horseless carriage” in Texas and, in a bold move, decided to drive it from Terrell to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Imagine the spectacle of that day—dust kicking up behind a rumbling, gasoline-powered contraption, locals stopping in their tracks to witness the future rolling past them. Up until that point, transportation in Texas was dominated by horses and carriages, making the sight of an automobile nothing short of astonishing.

Green’s journey from Terrell to Dallas wasn’t just a drive—it was an event. Townspeople gathered along the route, watching in amazement as this mechanical marvel glided past. For many, it was their first time witnessing an automobile, a machine that would soon redefine the way people lived, worked, and traveled.

A Drive Into History

The significance of this event extends far beyond Terrell. Colonel Green’s drive marked the beginning of Texas’ love affair with the automobile. It paved the way for advancements in road infrastructure, the rise of car culture, and the eventual transformation of commerce and industry across the state.

Fast forward to 2024, and we find ourselves at the 125th anniversary of this historic moment. While automobiles today are faster, sleeker, and packed with technology that Green could never have imagined, it all started with that single, daring ride from Terrell to Dallas.

Mural of Texas' first car ride by Colonel Green.

Mural in Terrell, TX depicting Colonel Green’s first car ride.

Celebrating 125 Years

In honor of this anniversary, Terrell is embracing its role as the cradle of Texas automotive history. The Terrell Mural Walk will feature a special commemorative “paint-by-number” mural celebrating the event. The city will also host an antique car show, showcasing the evolution of automobiles over the past century.

As we reflect on this milestone, let’s take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. From Green’s horseless carriage to the electric and self-driving cars of today, the journey of the automobile has been nothing short of remarkable. And it all started right here, in Terrell, Texas.

So the next time you start your engine and hit the road, remember—you’re following in the tire tracks of history. 🚗💨
